Where Should Your Marketing Budget Go This Fall?

Fall has a way of making everyone reassess their priorities. Consumers are settling back into routines, holiday shopping is looming, and businesses are staring down year-end goals that suddenly feel much closer than they did in June. That makes autumn an excellent time to take another look at where your marketing dollars are actually going.

Rather than throwing more money at every channel, focus on the places where your audience is paying attention and where your investment can make the biggest impact. A thoughtful mix of brand awareness, high-intent advertising, and engaging creative can help carry your momentum through fall and into the holiday season.

Get Out Into the Real World With Out-of-Home Advertising

Digital ads may dominate marketing conversations, but your customers don’t spend their entire lives behind screens. Fall brings people back to offices, schools, stadiums, shopping districts, and busy roads, creating plenty of opportunities to reach them in the real world.

Billboards, transit placements, digital displays, and other out-of-home advertising can put your brand in front of large audiences without asking anyone to click, scroll, or open an app. Working with a billboard advertising agency can also make it easier to identify strategic locations, understand local audiences, and coordinate placements that complement your campaign.

OOH works especially well alongside digital advertising. Someone might notice your billboard during their commute, encounter your brand again on social media that evening, and search for your company when they’re ready to buy.

Put Paid Search Dollars Behind High-Intent Customers

When someone is actively searching for a product or service you sell, that’s a pretty good time to show up. Paid search allows you to reach consumers who have already demonstrated intent rather than trying to convince an entirely cold audience to care.

Before increasing your fall search budget, dig into your existing data. Identify keywords, campaigns, and landing pages that consistently drive conversions, then prioritize those proven performers.

Seasonality matters, too. Search behavior can change quickly as people start planning holidays, buying gifts, tackling home projects, or preparing for colder weather. Adjusting keywords and messaging accordingly can help your ads stay relevant.

Give Paid Social a Seasonal Refresh

Your summer ads don’t necessarily belong in October. Updating your paid social creative for fall can keep campaigns from feeling stale while giving you opportunities to test new messages before holiday competition heats up.

Experiment with fresh imagery, seasonal hooks, short-form video, and different offers. Instead of immediately pouring more money into paid social, test several concepts on smaller budgets. Once clear winners emerge, you can confidently shift more spending toward the creative and audiences that deliver results.

Invest in Content That Keeps Working After Fall Ends

Some marketing campaigns disappear the moment you stop paying for them. Great content can continue to attract potential customers long after the pumpkin decorations have been put back in storage. That makes fall a smart time to invest in SEO and content that supports both your immediate priorities and your longer-term growth.

Start by looking at what your audience is already searching for. Customer questions, search trends, sales conversations, and existing website performance can all reveal useful topics. From there, create a mix of timely seasonal pieces and evergreen resources that will remain relevant year-round.

The key is thinking beyond traffic alone. Content should answer real questions, introduce people to your brand, and provide logical next steps. A useful guide that attracts the right visitors and moves them closer to becoming customers can be much more valuable than a viral post that brings thousands of people who never return.

Save Room for Email and Retargeting

Acquiring new customers matters, but don’t forget about the people who already know you. Email and retargeting campaigns can help you reconnect with previous customers, website visitors, subscribers, and shoppers who came close to purchasing but didn’t quite make it to checkout.

Fall offers plenty of reasons to reach back out. You can share seasonal products, useful content, limited-time promotions, holiday previews, or personalized recommendations based on previous behavior.

Segmentation can make these campaigns even more effective. Rather than sending everyone the same message, tailor your marketing to different customer groups and where they are in the buying journey.

Keep a Test-and-Learn Fund in Your Back Pocket

Not every dollar needs a permanent home on September 1st. Reserve a portion of your fall marketing budget for experimentation so you can capitalize on opportunities that emerge throughout the season.

That money might fund a new ad platform, creative format, audience, geographic market, or campaign idea. Give each experiment a clear objective and measurable success criteria before launching it.

Build a Fall Budget That Can Move With Your Customers

There’s no universal formula for the perfect fall marketing budget. The strongest approach combines channels that generate immediate results with investments that build awareness and long-term growth.

Most importantly, stay flexible. Track performance throughout the season, identify what’s actually moving the needle, and shift spending accordingly. Your September budget doesn’t have to look exactly like your November budget, and it probably shouldn’t.
